Our Church – A Legacy of History

“The history of the Calvary Seventh-day Adventist church is a rich one filled with stories of faith and triumph”

The Begining:

In the early 1900s, a small company of first place of worship believers organized to form the beginnings of what was to become an historic faith community. This group of believers met and worshipped in various homes until in 1910 they built the first house of worship at 1222-30th Street in the city of Newport News. Shortly thereafter, under the leadership of Elder J. B. Mallory, a church school was established with classes being held in a room adjoining the sanctuary.

Over The Decades:

In 1983 the new church building was completed and dedicated at its current location at 1200 17th Street. Mortgage burning throughout the decades, many ministers have served this congregation including Elder J.B. Mallory, Elder S. Barbour, Elder M. Burgess, Elder W.H. Sebastian, Elder A. Anderson, Elder Jethro Lester, Elder R. Preston, Elder J.E. Farrow, Elder J. Wagner, Jr., Elder James Thomas, Elder W.C. Scales, Jr., Elder Leonard Newton, Elder Auldwin T. Humphrey, Elder William Ervin, Elder Alvin Kibble, Elder Alonzo Wagner, Elder Harry Cartwright, Elder St. Clare M. Phipps, Elder Gerald Wells, Elder Stephen Richardson, and Elder Ronald Reeves. Elder Trevor Kinlock became the pastor in 2005, and in June 2010, Calvary welcomed it’s first assistant pastor, Elder Keenan Tyler.

Today:

Today Calvary’s ministry is as vibrant as ever! Our mission is to minister to the real needs of all people as we proclaim the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe in the sovereignty of God the Father and the brotherhood of all humanity. Our faces and experiences may differ but our faith binds us together in a common cord of brotherhood. Under the leadership of Pastors Kinlock & Tyler, we are committed to “kingdom business” in anticipation of the soon return of Jesus Christ. We thank God for over 100 years of ministry, service, and community as a church body. Because of His faithfulness, we are confident that the best is still yet to come!
